The thing that helped me the most was reverse engineering designs that I liked. Going through this process taught me a lot (and continues to!): 1) Identify designs I like, 2) Analyze what I think works well, 3) Recreating them myself. I'll then seek out specific educational resources in the context of whatever problem I'm trying to solve which makes the concepts stick in my head better.
